| The common English figures of speech
Personification : ( تشخيص – تجسيد) Is a representation of inanimate objects or abstract ideas as living being. … the sky is crying. … the night embraced me and the moon smiled down upon me. Hyperbole: (غلو – استغراق) Is a form of literary exaggeration in which a person or thing is described as being better or worse, or larger or smaller, than is actually the case. … his eyes were fountains of tears. … he drinks like a fish. … it will take me a million years to fix this problem. Simile : ( تشبيه) Is a specific comparison by means of the words ( like – as ) between two kinds of ideas or objects. … she is like a shining star. … he is as fast as lightning. Metaphor: (مجاز) Is the use of the word or phrase denoting one kind of idea or object (thing) in place of another word or phrase for the purpose of suggesting a likeness ( similarity) between the two. … her teeth are two rows of pearls. Apostrophe: (المناجاة) Is a device in which the poet addresses a person who usually is either absent or dead, an inanimate object, or an abstract idea. … O moon, do not look upon my sorrow! Metonymy: (استعارة) Is the use of a word or phrase for another to which it has an important relation. … the hostess kept a good table ( good food). … Live by the sword, die by the sword. Oxymoron: (تناقض) Is a combination of two seemingly contradictory words. … dear wounds, fair storms, freezing fires, nice monster. … childhood is so bittersweet. … make haste slowly. Paradox: (مفارقة – عبارة متناقضة ظاهريا) Is a statement that appears contradictory to common sense yet is true in fact. … colorless green ideas sleep furiously. … A well known secret agent. Irony: ( سخرية) Is a lightly sarcastic mode (way) of speech, in which words are used to convey a meaning contrary to their literal sense ( meaning). … you want me to look for him in New York well, New York is a small city. Synecdoche: Is using the part to express the whole, the whole for a part. … 50 head of cattle. … fifty sails = fifty ships. … we need new hands for the factory. … God bless the hands which prepared this food. Pun: ( تلاعب لفظي) Is the play on the duality of meaning of one word. … there is no room for me in this room. Anastrophe(inversion): Reversing the normal word order common in the English sentence. … stone walls do not a prison make. Caesura: (وقف – انقطاع) The pausing or stopping within a line of poetry caused by needed punctuation. … Living breathing, apathy. … Saps energy, will, interest.
